Exeter International Airport
The population of the city of Exeter is roughly around 111,076, according to the census taken in the year 2001. A city this big should have an airport close to it. Exeter has an international airport located near the city in the county of Devon. The airport is called Exeter International Airport. The airport handles over one million passengers annually. It offers both scheduled and chartered flights. In the year 2007, Devon County Council sold majority of the airport share. The Regional and City Airports Ltd. bought it.
The history of this airport goes back to the year 1937 and it was opened in the year 1938. It was used during World War II. The size of the runway was increased then and the surface was covered with Asphalt. The airport was handed over to the Ministry of Civil Aviation in the year 1947.
The major airlines, which operates here, is the Flybe Airlines. This is based in Exeter. It is a low cost airline and has four maintenance hangars at the airport. Thomson Airways is a holiday charter airline, which operates from Exeter International Airport. It has its base here. A number of other holiday charter airlines also operate from here. A number of airlines offers scheduled service. Some of them include Air Transat, Isles of Sicily Skybus and Flybe. Charter service is provided by Air Malta, Flybe, BH Air, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways, Onur Air etc. Titan Airways, Jet2.com and BAC Express Airlines offer cargo service.
