The Royal marines, a part of the British Army had their base at Chivenor. Chivenor is situated bordering South West Coast path on the Northern Coast of Devon, England. The northern shore of the Taw estuary is the landing base for the Royal Marines. Way back in the 1930s, Chivenor was a civil airfield and only after the Royal Air Force took over the area that it became a coastal command center and was known as the RAF Chivenor. The base was used primarily as a training ground for its forces and aircrafts.

Earlier 22 Squadron operated the base at Chivenor for all of RAF, Navy and the use of marines. Presently search and rescue duties are the mina preoccupation at the marine base and are conducted by 624VGS Squadron that operates Vigilant T1 motor gliders and trains the local Air Cadets in various flying skills. Service's aircraft like the Merlin's, Sea Kings, Pumas, Lynxs, Hercules, King Airs, Chinooks and Hawks use it as their training base.

Hercules, C17 and helicopters that support marine operations in this region, operates regular flights. Royal Marines Base, Chivenor is also home to not only the Royal marines, but also the Royal Engineers, Commando Logistics regiment and the 24 Commando regiment.

Due to the flooding that is a regular feature at Boscastle, the Royal marines could see a steady withdrawal from this region. The Royal Marines Base Chivenor could see some changes in future with the government deciding to reduce its spending on military aircrafts and training.
