Exeter University
Exeter University is, unsurprisingly, located in the city of Exeter. It is among the most respected universities in the UK and is regularly listed favourably in the league tables for many subjects.
There are three main campuses to the university; Streatham, St Lukes and Tremough (which is based in Cornwall).
The university became known as The University of Exeter after receiving its royal charter in 1955, though its roots come from a much earlier time. Shortly after this, in 1962, its post graduate medical school was founded. In 1991 the college of St Mark and St John in Plymouth were affiliated with the University of Exeter. Later in 2000, the Peninsula Medical School was founded as a joint venture between the University of Plymouth, University of Exeter and the National Health Service. In Exeter, the medical school has its base in the area of St.Lukes in the city, as well as numerous local hospitals.
In 2004 all of the university interests that were based in Cornwall were moved to a single Cornwall base. In the same year it was announced that the Music and Chemistry departments of the university would face closure. This was also considered for the Italian department, but in the end this was not carried out. The Biology department was also re-structured and became a part of the School of Biosciences.
Not only does Exeter have excellent ratings in academic league tables but it also rates very highly for student satisfaction. In a recent National Survey of students, Exeter University came out 7th in terms of student satisfaction for their overall university experience.
